Thessaloniki hosts the first EUROPEAN YOUTH FRIENDLY CONFERENCE on 22 June 2018, a gathering in the historic Greek city connecting municipality representatives, youth and urban development experts from Greece and from all around Europe, key people and coordinators involved in European Youth Capital programmes throughout Europe and youth workers actively involved in developing youth friendly ecosystems all around Europe.

Thessaloniki was European Youth Capital back in 2014. After 4 years the legacy of the Youth Capital is still here and define the city, the people and especially the young generation. Thessaloniki European Youth Capital focus on active youth participation, voluntarism and the active involvement of the local youth NGO sector. In all this 3 issues Thessaloniki manage to present not just a list of successful initiatives and events but the starting point for social changes with the active involvement of the young people is municipal level, the co-management with the municipality on youth policy issues and the encouragement of an interesting and extend volunteer movement that is still active in city level.

The event takes place in the framework of the celebration of the first 10 years of the existence of the European Youth Capital, a milestone which enables analysis and reflection on past results but also on future perspectives for title. It also combines several ongoing efforts regarding the development of dedicated participatory budgeting mechanisms for youth, urban level thematic programmes and specific urban consultation mechanisms for young people.

The also event takes place in the context of several initiatives and endeavours launched in the framework of the Network of European Youth Capitals, a project based cooperation of the cities of Turin from Italy, Braga and Cascais from Portugal, Maribor from Slovenia, Thessaloniki from Greece, Cluj-Napoca from Romania, Ganja from Azerbaijan, Varna from Bulgaria, Novi Sad from Serbia and Amiens from France, all cities which earned this ever more prestigious title through its 10 years’ existence.
